RAMSES 3rd Stakeholder Dialogue

Understanding vulnerabilities, assessing economic gains and unlocking the transformative potential of climate adaptation in cities

The 3rd RAMSES Stakeholder Dialogue will take place in Rome (Italy), on 4 October 2016. This is the last in a series of three Stakeholder Dialogues organised by the project and represents a unique opportunity for cities and urban adaptation experts and practitioners to benefit from access to the interim results of RAMSES, share their experiences and provide feedback to help guide RAMSES research.

Key questions will be understanding climatic and socio-economic risks and vulnerabilities in cities, assessing the costs and the benefits of different adaptation measures, and exploiting the transformative potential of climate adaptation and unlocking co-benefits.

The input provided by RAMSES experts including the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research, the Tyndall Centre at Newcastle University, the London School of Economics and Tecnalia will be shared and discussed with stakeholders in a two-way dialogue. Attendance is free of charge.

Resilient Communities II

Building community cohesion for a time of stress and shock

Community cohesion is vital for resilience. When testing times arise, through natural or manmade shocks, or when stresses in society begin to divide and polarise, that is when a community that has a shared identity and a common purpose is able to move forward together rather than fall apart.

This two day conference will explore how we can build social cohesion in preparation for change, it will look at global challenges and place these in national and local contexts demonstrating that we need top down planning to blend with grassroots initiatives.

A workshop on 6 October as part of the conference will discuss the findings and tools of the Smart Mature Resilience project.

Building Sustainability is an international conference which brings together decision-makers and experts from city government, business, real estate and urban planning. The conference focuses on how the built environment can contribute to sustainable living and a more stable climate, and will address a range of issues including smart cities, adaptation, urban development, buildings and energy.

The conference is organised by the City of Stockholm, Sweden Green Building Council and the World Green Building Council, with C40 and ICLEI as international supporting partners.

Adapting to the effects of climate change

Support opportunities for cities and communities

The webinar, "Anpassung an die Folgen des Klimawandels: Unterstützungsangebote für Städte und Gemeinden" will introduce some of the opportunities for information and support especially relevant to the needs of German cities and municipalities. The primary emphasis will be on the online guideline "Klimalotse", a revised version of which has been available since Spring 2016. Following the presentations, there will be time for questions and exchange. Questions relating specifically to the revised 'Klimalotse' are welcome to be submitted in advance, so that these can be dealt with in greater depth as part of the webinar.

Building urban resilience to disaster risks and climate change for sustainable development

Linking Sendai, New York, Paris and Quito

This event, chaired by DG ECHO Director Jean-Louis de Brouwer, will explore through the lens of urban development, the linkages and synergies between the Sendai Framework, Agenda 2030, and the Paris Agreement, to identify opportunities and challenges that can inform and strengthen the new Urban Agenda. Discussions will aim to reinforce the need for strategic urban and territorial planning and management and the importance of addressing the urban dimension in the implementation of the international frameworks. Cities are the right 'playing field' to understand practical and innovative ways of linking multiple development goals, and designing and implementing mutually reinforcing policies. Recommendations will thus contribute to the overall coherence of these international frameworks, around a common urban topic and with a common goal: a safe, resilient, inclusive and sustainable world for all.

Resilient Cities at Habitat III

Shifting toward resilient urban development

This session will discuss cooperation of national, regional and local level actors for resilience and adaptation planning and implementation. Speakers will explore methods for achieving complementarity in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, Sustainable Development Goal 11, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Representatives from international organizations and local governments will exchange on required national framework conditions and finance mechanisms, share opportunities for capacity building from global support initiatives, and present examples of successful local action.

Local Renewables Conference 2016

Energising the smart city and region

The global energy needs are set to increase 40% by 2030. In response, the EU Energy Union recognises the importance of putting cities and regions central in making energy more secure, affordable and sustainable. European cities are searching for innovative ways of meeting the energy demands, whilst responding to citizen needs. Smart technologies are increasingly considered as appropriate solutions to improve citizens’ life quality and respond to the EU climate and energy ambitions.

Energy provision and usage are core elements in the quest for a smart city. But the question arises whether a smart city can also be a sustainable city. What role can, and should, smart technologies play in the search for improved energy efficiency and quality of life in a city? What are the opportunities and limitations of new technologies for urban energy transformation? And what is the role of social innovation and citizen engagement?

These topics will be at the heart of the discussion at the Local Renewables Conference 2016. The conference will bring together leading and learning cities, policy-makers from European and national governments, business, research and finance institutions, and will showcase practical and innovative examples of how to reduce energy use, as well as how to make best use of energy sources in the region.
